Job Description - Senior Scientist, Innovation Team
About Harbinger Health
Harbinger Health is pioneering the detection of early cancer and enabling foundationally new approaches to cancer screening, diagnosis, and management. Incubated within Flagship Pioneering for three years before launching in 2021, Harbinger combines advances in artificial intelligence with proprietary insights into the biology of early cancer cell formation to identify cancer before it is visible or symptomatic with the aim of developinglow-cost, multi-cancer blood tests.
At Harbinger, we intend to lead in shaping this future - creating a proactive paradigm so that people can live cancer-free for longer, adding years to life and life to years. We envision a future where, instead of keeping cancer from spreading, it could be kept from forming, making a cancer diagnosis a routine health problem to be addressed rather than a life-altering event to be feared with profound implications for people, healthcare systems and societies.
Our answer starts with proprietary solutions we are developing with our platform technology. By making cancer screening accessible on a global scale, Harbinger Health has the potential to fundamentally change cancer care, for everyone.
Our lifesaving work is grounded by our principles of rigor and transparency, constructive engagement, inclusiveness, accountability and quality, and a strong commitment to our customers, patients, and each other. These values drive our decisions and actions. We are a highly dynamic, entrepreneurial, and innovation-driven organization seeking collaborative, passionate, and dedicated people to join our team.
Position Summary
Harbinger Health's Innovation Team is searching for a Senior Scientist with expertise in bioassay development and optimization. This individual will spearhead the creation of innovative bioassay technologies, which then will be optimized for clinical diagnostic validation through collaboration with clinical teams. With mentorship from the Director of Innovation, the Senior Scientist will autonomously craft, conduct, and relay advancements in bioassay technology. Key for this role is experience in tweaking experimental bioassay conditions; mere large-scale sample processing or specimen QC doesn't suffice. Additionally, this leader will mentor a Research Associate, ensuring systematic lab workflows. Beyond lab skills, four core competencies are paramount: a keen understanding of genomic science combined with innovative problem-solving, swift mastery of novel techniques and their practical application, adaptability in a dynamic work setting, and superior communication skills, given the cross-functional nature of the role.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Champion the inception and evolution of novel bioassays.
  • Strategize, implement, and articulate experimental endeavors, aligning with the Innovation Team's vision.
  • Delve into and grasp avant-garde biology, protocols, and technological avenues.
  • Articulate experimental designs and outcomes to diverse intra-company teams.
  • Mentor a Research Associate, facilitating bioassay technological advancements.
  • Collaborate seamlessly within a multidisciplinary team framework.
  • Uphold lab hygiene, organization, and maintenance.

    Qualifications:

    • Ph.D., or M.S. in Molecular Biology, Genetics, or a related field with 5-8 years industry experience.
    • Demonstrated experience in genomic assay development or optimization, especially qPCR, dPCR, and NGS. RNA experience will be considered an advantage.
    • Prior engagements limited to large-scale sample processing or cell line QC won't be deemed adequate.
    • A depth of experience in NGS, especially spanning library construction, enrichment, and data scrutiny, is highly favorable.
    • Familiarity with clinical biomarkers, particularly those harnessing high-dimensional data, is a distinct advantage.
    • Proven track record of autonomous project leadership and/or team management.
    • An innate ability to grasp and implement fresh concepts, techniques, and notions.
    • Demonstrated proficiency in multitasking and swiftly adapting to workflow and priority shifts.

Harbinger Health iscommitted to equal employment opportunityregardless of race, color, ancestry, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital status, disability, gender identity or Veteran status.
