Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Instrumentation
Specialist The MIT Institute for Soldier Nanotechnologies (ISN)
seeks an instrumentation specialist to support diverse research
activities and have hands-on daily responsibility for user
training, operation, and maintenance for a variety of
high-capability instruments (e.g., microscopy; spectroscopy;
optical, thermal and mechanical characterization) at the ISN
research facility. Responsibilities include providing one-on-one
and group training for a variety of analytical tools and
instruments with an emphasis on microscopy (3D X-ray microscope
(X-Ray CT), scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force
microscope (AFM), and other research instrumentation; training
users on how to operate the research equipment and helping to
explain the science of instrument capabilities and operations to
help trainees better understand the underlying principles of how
each instrument works; maintaining and troubleshooting research
instrumentation, including performing simple repairs, cleanings,
and routine calibrations and working with vendors/manufacturers to
schedule service for more complex repairs/maintenance; and
functioning as a member of the ISN research facility operations
team, including ISN laboratory and facilities manager, the
assistant to the ISN laboratory manager, and ISN research
scientists; and assisting with other lab and facilities operations
as needed. Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in the
physical sciences or engineeringAt least one year of hands-on
experience operating and training people to use SEM, AFM, X-ray CT,
or similar microscopy or spectroscopy equipment Preferred
Qualifications: Comfort working with and training people with a
wide range of experience levels, including faculty, students,
postdocs, professional staff, and visiting U.S. government
researchersBackground working with a diverse range of complex
materials, including polymers and (nano) compositesExperience
operating high-capability instrumentation for materials
characterization in a research-focused laboratory Interested
