HARVARD LAW SCHOOL Cambridge, MA ASSISTANT DEAN FOR ACADEMIC AND FACULTY AFFAIRS Harvard Law School (---HLS---) seeks an Assistant Dean for Academic and Faculty Affairs. Reporting directly to the long-serving Dean for Academic and Faculty Affairs and working closely with the Dean and Deputy Deans, the Assistant Dean manages all functions of the Office of Academic Affairs (---OAA---). The OAA provides critical strategic leadership and concierge-quality support to curricular planning and development, the faculty appointments processes, faculty policy matters and institutional research requests, as well as oversight and implementation of systems that facilitate and track the work of HLS---s 115 full-time faculty and 200 other teaching resources. The Assistant Dean is part of the academic group, led by the Dean for Academic and Faculty Affairs, composed of the Office of Academic Affairs, the Office of the Registrar, the Office of Clinical and Pro Bono Programs, and the Learning Experience & Technology team. The Assistant Dean leads a team of five, including four direct reports: Associate Director of Academic Affairs, Director of Faculty Affairs, Institutional Research Analyst, Academic Affairs Coordinator; and one indirect report: Faculty Affairs Data Manager. The Assistant Dean serves on the Curriculum Committee (with the Dean, the Deputy Deans and the Associate Dean of Academic and Faculty Affairs) and staffs two Faculty Appointments Committees (one for entry level and the other for lateral). As Assistant Dean, you will: -- Oversee administration of HLS---s faculty appointments committees and appointments processes. -- Coordinate HLS---s curriculum planning and development as part of the academic team, including tracking of faculty teaching preferences, teaching gaps and curricular analysis. -- Serve as a primary liaison between the faculty hiring committees (entry-level and lateral) and the curriculum committee to facilitate alignment between annual curricular needs and short and long-term faculty hiring efforts. -- Support the development of faculty meeting agendas and staff faculty meetings in collaboration with the Dean for Academic and Faculty Affairs. -- Manage the visiting faculty and adjunct lecturer appointments process and on-boarding of appointees to HLS. -- Manage residential and non-residential academic fellowship programs. -- Oversee annual updating of the HLS Faculty Manual and Handbook of Academic Policies, including policy review and analysis. -- Oversee the Faculty Workshop series. -- Oversee of the annual collection and analysis of faculty data, including outside activities, leave requests, summer research and conflict of interest reporting; management of faculty data for institutional research, compliance and external reporting purposes. -- Monitor changes in the ABA Standards and Rules of Procedure for Approval of Law Schools and their impact on HLS policies and practices; oversight of ABA annual questionnaires and reports. -- Oversee the HLS faculty information system and OAA website. Serve as project manager for enhancements, upgrades and related tech projects. -- Oversee OAA print publications, including the faculty directory. -- Manage the OAA---s budget. -- Serve as an ambassador to the HLS and university communities. Qualifications: A bachelor---s degree and at least ten years of experience in higher education administration, including a successful record of office management and professional supervision, are essential. Candidates with a JD or other relevant advanced degree will be considered with seven years of related professional experience. A JD and experience with curricular planning and/or faculty affairs would be advantageous. The successful candidate will be a strategically minded, analytical academic leader of people, projects and process; and also an autonomous self-starter with technical savvy and intellectual flexibility. Candidates should demonstrate discretion and the ability to build trust with and engage faculty and other academic professionals, both as a collaborative project manager and an individual contributor. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential. Domain knowledge and professional networks in legal education would be advantageous. Compensation is pegged at Harvard University---s salary grade 61. Salary will be commensurate with experience, in addition to Harvard---s exceptional employee benefits.
