Job Description

The Scholars Strategy Network (SSN) is looking for a paid, part-time Chapter Organizing Intern (or Fellow if the applicant is a graduate student). The Intern will be responsible for helping the Chapters team support SSN's almost 40 existing and emerging chapters as they work to build communities of engaged scholars and inform local policy. SSN's Chapters team provides chapter leaders with up-to-date member lists, access to live and recorded trainings, and one-on-one coaching. The team also records chapters' progress throughout the year towards their self-identified goals in order to track impact and capture best practices to share with other chapters.

The Chapter Organizing Intern is a flexible part-time position with an hourly wage between $15-$18 per hour, commensurate with experience. SSN believes internships should be an important stage in one's professional growth, and will offer opportunities to participate in SSN hosted policy and media trainings, conversations with scholars, and also offers interns a $50 credit each semester for a professional development activity in alignment with SSN's mission.

The position will run through May of 2022, with the potential for an extension over the summer. The position requires a minimum of 10 hours/week, with up to 20 hours available starting in January. SSN's office is closed between December 24th and January 3rd, 2022. SSN staff are fully remote at present, and remote work is expected and will be supported. This position reports to SSN's Associate Director of Chapters.

Responsibilities

As a large organization with a relatively small staff, SSN has a lean, productive Chapters team that supports our chapter leaders and fellows across the country in building communities of publicly engaged scholars. Among other tasks, the Chapter Organizing Intern will:

  • Help manage member data by building and cleaning member Salesforce reports for chapter leaders.
  • Update and develop training materials by reviewing learning modules on SSN's platform to identify areas for improvement, especially ways to improve user interaction with learning modules. This will require some video editing.
  • Track and document chapter progress. Using chapter flyers, newsletters, and other communications, add chapter activities to a shared chapter calendar, and draft end-of-semester summaries of chapter success. May also include developing handouts or other content to share with SSN staff and other chapters.
  • Coordinate monthly skill-building webinars (spring only): coordinate with chapter leaders and staff from across SSN's departments to host live trainings over Zoom (no facilitation required).
  • Perform additional duties as assigned, depending on experience, interest, and department needs.

    Qualifications

The ideal candidate for this position would be:
    • An advanced undergraduate student or graduate student
    • Organized, detail-oriented, and willing to ask questions
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Google Apps, and Dropbox
    • Able to move among tasks and manage follow-up
    • An excellent writer and proofreader
    • Self-motivated, professional, positive, and trustworthy
    • Experienced or interested in in policy or advocacy
    • Committed to SSN's mission, interested in evidence-based policy, and eager to learn more about when and how research is used in policymaking

Additional skills below are not required but will be considered:
      • Experience with light video editing (on iMovie, Adobe Photoshop, or other platforms)
      • Experience with Salesforce or other database management
      • Experience setting up group Zoom sessions (e.g., registration management, polls, etc.)
      • Experience developing curricular or training materials
