Scientist, Translational Neuropathology
Company: Biogen Idec
Posted on: June 12, 2021
Through cutting-edge science and medicine, Biogen discovers,
develops and delivers worldwide innovative therapies for people
living with serious neurological and neurodegenerative diseases.
Founded in 1978, Biogen is a pioneer in biotechnology and today has
the leading portfolio of medicines to treat multiple sclerosis,
introduced the first approved treatment for spinal muscular atrophy
and is at the forefront of neurology research for conditions
including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and amyotrophic
The Translational Neuropathology group at Biogen (Biomarkers,
Clinical Sciences) is seeking a highly motivated and talented
scientist to join a fast-paced, interdisciplinary, dynamic team
engaged in translational research to enhance our human neurologic
disease portfolio. The scientist will employ cutting-edge molecular
and histopathologic technologies in studies of human brain tissues
leading to biomarker discovery and clinical measurement strategies,
target validation and understanding of disease biology. The
candidate may also contribute to novel biomarker assay development
for preclinical studies to advance therapeutic programs toward
clinical development. The scientist will contribute to portfolio
success in neurodegeneration and/or neuromuscular diseases.
- The ideal candidate has demonstrated a track record of
high-quality productivity and rigor in pathology or neuroscience
- A background in translational neuroscience with a focus on
neurodegeneration and/or neuroinflammation is highly
- Established knowledge of human neuroanatomy and neuropathology,
and skills in histology, immunohistochemistry and in situ
hybridization, will be advantageous but can also be acquired in
- Basic experience in cellular and biochemical science such as
standard molecular biology and protein biochemistry techniques
(e.g. DNA cloning, protein purification, real-time PCR, Western
blotting, immunoprecipitation, enzymatic assays) is required.
- Prior experience in one or more of the following innovative
technologies is desirable: single-cell transcriptomics, spatial
transcriptomics, Slide-seq/FISSEQ/seqFISH/MERFISH, proteomics,
FACS/CyTOF, imaging mass cytometry or MIBI.
- Highly effective communication skills and ability to work
independently or with minimal supervision in managing projects and
priorities are essential. Capacity to work in a highly
collaborative and cross-functional environment is required.
The position requires a PhD degree in Biological Sciences or a
related discipline and at least 2 years of relevant postdoctoral
laboratory experience in industry or academia.
