Job Description:

The Role:

We are seeking a motivated and innovative tissue and cellular biologist at the Senior Research Associate/Principal Research Associate level to support advancement of Moderna's mRNA technology platform and drug development pipeline. The candidate will join the Biological Science department to assist in developing methods to assess mRNA delivery to various tissues and cell populations ex vivo. This work will utilize a wide range of tissue processing and molecular and cell biology techniques to interrogate formulated mRNA and encoded protein distribution.

Here's What You'll Do:

Specific projects will involve collaborative interactions in a multidisciplinary group and across diverse biology areas that require ex vivo tissue processing and assay development to characterize delivery of Moderna's drug products. This is a basic research position that requires critical thinking, flexibility, multitasking, and especially the ability to learn new techniques.

  • Development of in vitro cell-based investigations to evaluate delivery efficiency.

  • Enzymatic processing of fresh tissue samples for downstream cell population separation and analysis.

  • Fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) to analyze delivery to multiple cell types.

  • Execute and troubleshoot immunofluorescence protocols, independently adapt new protocols into practice, and query literature to incorporate additional assays as needed.

  • General laboratory assistance including ordering and receiving of lab supplies, reagent preparation, and lab equipment maintenance.

  • Analyze, interpret and present data to internal parties.

  • Accountable for project success and results delivery.

Here's What You'll Bring to the Table:

  • BS/MS (Biomedical Engineering, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, or related science) with 3-8 years of relevant experience developing and performing tissue processing methodologies and cellular/biochemical assays

  • Strong knowledge in fresh tissue processing and basic cellular techniques

  • Experience in FACS and quantitative fluorescence imaging

  • Experience with molecular biology such as basic cloning, PCR, and mammalian cell transfections

  • Strong verbal and communication skills, and the ability to maintain detailed research records

  • Ability to independently design and analyze controlled experiments

  • Ability to work on multiple projects and collaborate effectively in a fast-paced, highly-dynamic, and cross-functional environment.

  • Candidate will be curious in exploring new paths for drug discovery, and bold in proposing creative experimental designs and ideas. Will work collaboratively with multifunctional teams and will be relentless in pursuing successful outcomes.

About Moderna:

In 10 years since its inception, Moderna has transformed from a science research-stage company advancing programs in the promising-but-still-unproven field of messenger RNA (mRNA), to an enterprise with its first medicine having treated millions of people, a diverse clinical portfolio of vaccines and therapeutics across six modalities, a broad intellectual property portfolio in areas including mRNA and lipid nanoparticle formulation, and an integrated manufacturing plant that allows for both clinical and commercial production at scale and at unprecedented speed. Moderna maintains alliances with a broad range of domestic and overseas government and commercial collaborators, which has allowed for the pursuit of both groundbreaking science and rapid scaling of manufacturing. Most recently, Moderna's capabilities have come together to allow the authorized use of one of the earliest and most-effective vaccines against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Moderna's mRNA platform builds on continuous advances in basic and applied mRNA science, delivery technology and manufacturing, and has allowed the development of therapeutics and vaccines for infectious diseases, immuno-oncology, rare diseases, cardiovascular diseases and auto-immune diseases. Today, 24 development programs are underway across these therapeutic areas, with 13 programs having entered the clinic. Moderna has been named a top biopharmaceutical employer by Science for the past six years. To learn more, visit
