The Preclinical and Center of Excellence (CoE) PMO Lead is a Sr. Manager/Associate Director R&D Project Manager role and a key member of the R&D PMO Leadership Team, responsible for overseeing the "CoE PMO support model" for all Early to Late Research R&D Project teams. The Preclinical and CoE PMO Lead serves as the key subject matter expert for the R&D Project Team Centricity operating model from Early Research to Preclinical/Pre-IND, and is responsible for working across the R&D Organization to identify, develop, optimize and implement R&D PMO best practices, tools, templates and ways of working with a focus on the needs of Early-Late Research/Preclinical programs. In addition to managing and tracking PMO deliverables for all CoE supported programs (e.g. monthly timeline updates and management of ad hoc R&D Project Team (RDPT) CoE support requests), the Preclinical and CoE PMO Lead is assigned as Sr. Manager/Associate Director R&D Project Manager for two to three Research stage R&D Portfolio projects.

Job Description

Manages a team of R&D Project Managers whose focus/assignments are predominantly Research stage programs. Serves as a key point of contact both for direct reports (R&D Project Managers) and as a matrix leader for any R&D Project Manager working on Research stage projects.

Drives the strategy and execution of the R&D PMO Center of Excellence (COE) support model for early research programs. Tracks and manages all CoE supported programs entering the portfolio and providing the CoE overview to new early research/CoE R&D Project Leads (RDPLs) as needed. Tracks and manages the CoE support inbox for ad hoc requests and works with PMO leadership to determine priority and capacity for support. Owns program level timelines for all CoE supported R&D Projects and, on a monthly cadence, communicates with RDPLs to solicit timeline updates.

Engages with the Program Leadership team and R&D Project Leader (RDPL) Council to co-facilitate the Pre-R2D RDPL Forum as a primary mechanism/community to identify strategic operations improvement needs and potential PMO solutions for Research stage project teams.

As Sr. Manager/Associate Director R&D Project Manager, supports two to three Research stage R&D Project Teams (RDPTs) by proactively managing project team collaboration, communication planning, and reporting within the team and across key cross-functional stakeholders to ensure timely completion of deliverables. This includes high quality RDPT meeting management (agenda management, meeting material preparation and organization, scheduling, meeting minutes, and effective action/decision/issue management).

Ensures high quality project planning and execution by facilitating the identification and tracking of R&D project team goals and developing and maintaining the integrated project schedule and the Project Portfolio Management system (Planisware). Identifies, tracks, communicates, and manages critical path activities, and holds team members accountable for functional delivery of plans. Liaises with the RDPT finance partner for budget planning and tracking and collaborates with the Strategic Planning and Operations (SPO) team to assess team resources & forecasting, identify resourcing gaps, and mitigate issues as necessary.

Supports effective decision making through identification and management of risks and issues, and the creation of project-level timeline scenarios to enable the assessment of project acceleration and other trade-offs. Drives the preparation of the RDPT for R&D governance meeting interactions and is the go-to SME for navigating governance and resourcing processes.


Sr. R&D Project Manager Qualifications

  • Minimum 3-7 years of prior project management experience in drug development, in a clinical development, project management, business planning, or drug discovery context
  • Proficient understanding of R&D drug development processes (emphasis on Preclinical R&D experience, preferably in multiple modalities - Biologics, Gene Therapy, Small Molecule, Antisense Oligonucleotides)
  • Outstanding ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; ability to communicate to a broad range of stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently, navigate ambiguity, adapt to change and make rapid, disciplined decisions to enable agile execution
  • Commitment to a customer-first culture and motivation to solving complex problems and leading teams to success
  • Proven ability to network and collaborate across multiple teams with flexible, positive attitude and ability to get results
  • Proficiency with integrated timeline/gantt chart development and technical experience with project management systems & collaboration tools (e.g. Planisware, Microsoft Project, OnePager Pro/Express, MS Teams, O365 Sharepoint)
  • Bachelor's Degree required - life sciences focused degree is a plus
  • MBA preferred
  • PMP certification or demonstrated Project Management experience is a plus

Preferred Qualifications for Associate Director, R&D Project Manager

  • 10+ Years demonstrated experience in R&D project/program management
  • Demonstrated success/experience leading global, cross-functional R&D teams
  • Ability to lead and influence in a highly matrixed operating model
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, and highly collaborative
  • Strong stakeholder management and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to manage complexity and ambiguity
  • Ability to present complex data to senior management for decision approvals.
  • Bachelor's Degree required - life sciences focused degree is a plus
  • Master's, PhD, MBA preferred
  • PMP certification is a plus
