- Master's degree in library or information science, or an
equivalent graduate degree from an ALA-accredited program.
- Minimum two years' reference and instruction, open education,
or scholarly communication experience in an academic or research
- Demonstrated knowledge of emerging technology trends related to
student success, online learning, digital scholarship, or digital
- Demonstrated experience leading successful initiatives
involving multiple stakeholders or grassroots community building
(through person-to-person and online interactions).
- Experience working with a diverse community and commitment to

the curriculum and across the community.

The Open Education Research Librarian (OERL) is responsible for
promoting the adoption and creation of open access collections for
the diverse community of learners at the Harvard Graduate School of
Education (HGSE). With the aim to build more inclusive and
equitable HGSE learning environments, the OERL builds the HGSE
community's understanding and integration of open education
practices to support student success through various forms of
outreach and programming. Reporting to the HGSE Librarian and
Director of Gutman Library, the OERL uses knowledge of open
education principles to guide colleagues to consider how we advise
selection of quality open education resources (OER), build
born-digital OER collections, manage Canvas-based OER course
reserves, and deliver library instruction and professional
development using OER.
The OERL serves as an active member of Gutman Library's Digital
Scholarship and Scholarly Communication Team, Research Services
Team, Communications Team, and the Research, Teaching, and Learning
(RTL) Team. The position leverages open education practices to
interpret fundamentals of equity and access within the ACRL
Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education and the
RUSA Guidelines for Behavioral Performance of Reference and
Information Service Providers.
Open Education Duties
- Develop and coordinate outreach initiatives and services
designed to support faculty in using open education resources that
align with their courses through both consultations and the
development of online resources (e.g., guides and tutorials).
- Build partnerships with faculty, library liaisons, Teaching and
Learning Lab staff, and Faculty Support Services staff to provide
comprehensive support for finding, adapting, or adopting open or
affordable course content.
- Work closely with the Digital Content & Research Data
Management Librarian to explore a service model and repository
solution for creating, managing, organizing, and distributing open
content created at HGSE, including digital scholarship projects and
open educational resources.
- Develop strategic partnerships with various HGSE and Harvard
University stakeholders and work as a member of the Communications
Team to both promote the use of OERs and to showcase their
integration into the curriculum.
- Engage in OER-related programming and outreach efforts,
including leading workshops, faculty learning communities, etc.,
focused on OERs and related subtopics, such as open pedagogy.
