Job Summary

The Open Education Research Librarian (OERL) is responsible for promoting the adoption and creation of open access collections for the diverse community of learners at the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE). With the aim to build more inclusive and equitable HGSE learning environments, the OERL builds the HGSE community's understanding and integration of open education practices to support student success through various forms of outreach and programming. Reporting to the HGSE Librarian and Director of Gutman Library, the OERL uses knowledge of open education principles to guide colleagues to consider how we advise selection of quality open education resources (OER), build born-digital OER collections, manage Canvas-based OER course reserves, and deliver library instruction and professional development using OER.

The OERL serves as an active member of Gutman Library's Digital Scholarship and Scholarly Communication Team, Research Services Team, Communications Team, and the Research, Teaching, and Learning (RTL) Team. The position leverages open education practices to interpret fundamentals of equity and access within the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education and the RUSA Guidelines for Behavioral Performance of Reference and Information Service Providers.

Open Education Duties

  • Develop and coordinate outreach initiatives and services designed to support faculty in using open education resources that align with their courses through both consultations and the development of online resources (e.g., guides and tutorials).
  • Build partnerships with faculty, library liaisons, Teaching and Learning Lab staff, and Faculty Support Services staff to provide comprehensive support for finding, adapting, or adopting open or affordable course content.
  • Work closely with the Digital Content & Research Data Management Librarian to explore a service model and repository solution for creating, managing, organizing, and distributing open content created at HGSE, including digital scholarship projects and open educational resources.
  • Develop strategic partnerships with various HGSE and Harvard University stakeholders and work as a member of the Communications Team to both promote the use of OERs and to showcase their integration into the curriculum.
  • Engage in OER-related programming and outreach efforts, including leading workshops, faculty learning communities, etc., focused on OERs and related subtopics, such as open pedagogy.
