  • Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 10 years of professional experience in education, instructional technology, or related field or
  • An advanced degree and a minimum of 8 years of related work experience

Job Summary

The Director of HarvardX Courses is responsible for the successful management of the entire HarvardX portfolio of courses, including the creation and development of new high-quality, high-impact online learning experiences on the edX platform. EdX is a non-profit, massive open online course (MOOC) provider founded by MIT and Harvard with more than 25 million learners worldwide. The Director is responsible for the maintenance and promotion of a large existing pipeline of online courses and resources on edX. Reporting to the VPAL Managing Director, this individual is a core member of the VPAL senior staff and is called upon for consultation on media production, instructional technology, and at times, marketing strategy.

The HarvardX Courses Director leads a team of instructional design managers, learning designers, content developers, and instructional technologists. They help manage the day-to-day relationship with the edX team and assist the VPAL leadership team in strategic decision-making in the partnership with edX. The HarvardX Director also collaborates with schools, departments, central administration, and other faculty and staff across the University to ensure the effective development of HarvardX online learning experiences.

The successful HarvardX Courses Director exemplifies and fosters a collaborative mindset across the organization and university, an understanding of creative/media approaches to learning, the diplomacy necessary to manage and work within matrixed teams, rigorous project management, and careful stewardship of HarvardX resources. They promote a deep appreciation for academic content and for the experience of the Harvard faculty and global learners who will engage with the HarvardX courses and modules managed by the staff they supervise. Highly collaborative, the HarvardX Courses Director is able to balance the competing demands inherent in innovation while keeping project teams and staff focused on delivering a high-quality learning experience on time and within established and emerging HarvardX practices.

The HarvardX Courses Director models organizational citizenship through effective mentorship, emphasis on purposeful experimentation, and unwavering focus on a positive, collaborative team environment. They are a creative problem solver who prioritizes and frames constructive options and team approaches to conflict resolution.
