The Role:

The Autoimmune and Exploratory Sciences group in Technology Square, Cambridge, MA is seeking an enthusiastic, experienced and motivated bench-level Scientist/Sr Scientist to support research and translational biomarker efforts for Moderna's innovative autoimmune therapeutics pipeline and early discovery programs. The successful candidate will possess scientific curiosity, a strong background in immunology, and a desire to identify and develop translational biomarkers for a variety of immunological and disease-related pathways. Knowledge of cellular immunology and experience with lymphocyte analysis is preferred but not required. Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a small team is essential.

Here's What You'll Do:

  • Apply your knowledge of immune regulatory pathways and ongoing immunology literature to identify and evaluate candidate biomarkers of target pathway modulation and disease modification.

  • Test your candidate biomarkers in cellular and in vivo models as appropriate, using a combination of assay technology platforms and commercial or self-developed assays.

  • Integrate preclinical biomarker evaluation into in vivo experimental designs during early project development

  • Partner with core functional groups for specialized analyses (e.g. genomics, sequencing, mass spec, histology)

  • Work with internal and external partners to design and test candidate, optimize and advance mRNA-based therapeutic candidates into early development

  • Collaborate with other members of the Autoimmunity and Exploratory Sciences team to identify and demonstrate translatable efficacy endpoints and target pathway modulation in preclinical disease models

  • Contribute to development of biomarker translatability from rodents through nonhuman primates to humans.

Here's What You'll Bring to the Table:

  • A PhD in Immunology, Cellular Biology, or related field

  • Strong working knowledge of immunology and immunological techniques, ideally including flow cytometry

  • Evidence of ability to research and incorporate published scientific literature to form hypotheses related to biomarkers, and design experiments to test hypotheses

  • Expectation to lead translational biomarker discovery from the bench.

  • Excellent research judgment and ability to communicate complex scientific issues in a logical and understandable way.

  • Strong verbal and communication skills, and ability to maintain detailed research records.

  • Experience working independently and collaboratively in small teams.

  • Ability to work on multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to effectively collaborate effectively in a dynamic, cross-functional environment.
