Principal Duties and Responsibilities 1. Participates in the
establishment of policies, procedures, methods, and techniques for
the area of responsibility, and implements same as approved. 2.
Works collaboratively with other areas of the Laboratory operation
to achieve department's annual goals. Recommends and participates
in Continuous Improvement activities on an ongoing basis. 3.
Supervises daily operations and ensures quality control through
regular review and monitoring of test procedures, results, etc. 4.
Interviews, selects, trains, and supervises section staff;
evaluates work performance and makes recommendations for personnel
actions. 5. Prepares work schedules to ensure effective coverage of
the Laboratory. 6. Prepares operating budget and manages same in
conjunction with the Laboratory Manager to ensure that expenditures
are within allocated funds. 7. Evaluates new equipment and
products, meets with sales representatives and vendors, and makes
recommendations for purchasing as appropriate. 8. Responsible for
supply ordering. Strives to keep supply expenses down through
constant monitoring of minimum inventories and waste reduction. 9.
Responsible for the Pathology computer applications. Develops and
designs reports; meets all requirements of accrediting agencies and
maintains system in collaboration with the Laboratory Information
Systems Supervisor. 10. Provides inservice education to other
Laboratory sections and hospital personnel, e.g., new
houseofficers. 11. Troubleshoots and maintains equipment; contacts
service for repair as needed. 12. Oversees billing of all Pathology
procedures including Medicare Part B billing procedures. 13.
Reviews all attorney requests for slides/reports and discusses such
with the Director of the Laboratory prior to release. 14. Keeps
abreast of developments in the specialty area(s) of responsibility
investigates new methods, procedures, etc.; and recommends
application as appropriate. 15. Maintains regular contact with
nursing, medical staff, and outreach clients regarding
interpretation of reports and recommendation of proper specimen
collection procedures. 16. Performs other duties as required. 17.
Performs duties of technologists as required. 18. Supports and
participates in the hospital's commitment to Continuous
Improvement. Through the development and use of objective data,
plans, implements, and evaluates processes that result in the
delivery of integrated services. 19. Performs technical duties as
required. 20. Responsible for regulatory compliance for areas of
responsibility. Requirements: KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
REQUIRED 1. B.A. or B.S. degree. 2. Five years of experience in
field of responsibility, with one year in a supervisory capacity.
3. Strong interpersonal skills, analytical ability, and ability to
function independently. WORKING CONDITIONS 1. Exposure to
infectious disease and to possible carcinogenic chemicals. 2.
Minimal exposure to caustic agents, acids, and fumes. 3. Occasional
prolonged standing and walking. 4. Works under constant time
deadlines. 5. Performs data entry with repetitive hand movement,
and visual concentration at video display terminal, in order to
review and enter data. 6. Requires manual dexterity using fine hand
manipulations. 7. Uses protective equipment as described in the
Laboratory Policy and Procedure Manual. 8. Requires exposure to
power tools and heavy equipment. 9. Complies with precautions, as
defined by Infection Control staff, in patients/materials requiring
isolation. 10. Consistently uses sharps safety devices as designed
to prevent injuries to self.
