Associate Scientist II, Cellular Process Development On January 11, 2021, we announced our intent to separate our severe genetic disease and oncology businesses into differentiated and independent publicly traded companies. We will retain focus on severe genetic disease (SGD) and will launch our oncology business ("Oncology Newco") as a new entity, with the completed transition expected by the end of 2021. ABOUT THE FLOCK The Cellular Process Development team for Sickle Cell Disease is all about designing processes to manufacture high quality stem cells in an innovative and scalable way for our patients. We develop the gene therapy manufacturing platform and chaperone it from pre-clinical to commercial manufacturing phases in collaboration with other teams across Pharmaceutical Sciences, Research and Clinical. With one approved product (Zynteglo---) and multiple clinical stage candidates, there is a wealth of growth opportunities for driven scientists to make a significant impact in the lives of patients. The focus of this position is to work on determining functional understanding and characterization of drug product manufacturing processes for stem cell therapies. We are looking for a motivated associate scientist to drive development and characterization projects. HOW YOU'LL FLY As an Associate Scientist bird reporting to a Scientist, you'll help to bring more patients their bluebird days by:

  • Performing experiments involving the isolation, transduction, expansion, and cryopreservation of gene-modified cells for treatment severe genetic diseases
  • Executing complex technical work related to stem cell biology, including cell isolation, viral gene transfer, tissue culture, PCR, flow cytometry, and other immunological assays
  • Working with all aspects of mammalian cell culture, including media and buffer preparation, culture initiation, propagation, and cryopreservation of cells, including primary human cells
  • Successfully completing general laboratory tasks including equipment maintenance
  • Maintaining accurate and reliable record keeping including database management, batch records, notebooks, and all other pertinent documentation
  • Executing hands-on lab work with a flexible schedule based on experimental work (some weekend work may be needed) WHAT YOU'LL BRING You're the bird we're looking for if you have:
    • BS in cell biology, immunology, biochemical engineering, or related with 2+ years of experience in a GMP/GLP environment
    • Mammalian and primary cell culture experience (required)
    • Working knowledge of a variety of cell-based methods
    • Strong understanding of tissue culture, cell biology, immunoassays, and general laboratory techniques
    • Experience in engineering with scaling design of primary cell-based bioreactors
