Job Description

As a key member of the US Medical Neuromuscular team, the Field Medical Specialist (FMS) is responsible for supporting field implementation of the US Medical Strategy for Biogen’s Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS ) program.  The FMS will develop and maintain professional relationships with prominent, therapeutically relevant healthcare providers and key decision makers as they relate to ALS. This role requires a high level of ownership of responsibilities and a demonstrated sense of urgency on priority initiatives.

This role is field based and requires successful engagement of audiences dispersed across the territory which will necessitate being comfortable both with remote engagements in virtual meeting venues (individual/groups) as well as (when permissible and feasible) in-person venues (individual/groups).

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

•Serve as US Field Medical employee to execute on US Medical, Clinical Development and Research & Development team initiatives aligned with US strategy/tactics

•Identify, develop, and nurture collaborative relationships with current and future external stakeholders (including KMEs, healthcare institutions, clinical research sites and advocacy groups) in the ALS therapeutic landscape

•Work with key professionals at the national, regional, and local level, educating them with current, fair-balanced medical, scientific information regarding Biogen’s ALS program

•Garner relevant and timely insights back into Biogen

•Maintain up-to-date medical and scientific knowledge of ALS and the understanding of current clinical practice and the clinician decision making process

•Own projects aligned to Home Office Medical Affairs in a Holistic Medical Affairs Model focused on aligning capabilities with overall Medical Affairs needs independent of geography.  Examples include but are not limited to:

Assist in the preparation and execution of regional and/or national advisory board meetings, including delivering compelling presentations and facilitating interactive discussion groups

As a content expert, contribute to the development/adaptation of medical materials consistent with Development & Scientific Material Review (DSMR) requirements (e.g. presentations, training materials, medical briefs and talking points) for internal colleagues as well as proactive and reactive resources for use in engagements with external stake holders

Present data at US Medical Affairs events, including advisory boards and trainings as well as congresses/medical education events

•Implement and disseminate high quality medical and scientific educational programs; provide clinical and scientific presentations at sites / hospitals

•Facilitate a coordinated presence at relevant conferences, including conference coverage planning, session coverage, KME meetings and high caliber congress summary reports

•Deliver targeted internal training for selected topics (e.g. KME engagement updates, congress news, and latest scientific developments)

•Execute on ALS specific initiatives (e.g. Early Access Program (EAP)), medical forum events or other medical affairs activities

•Contribute to the ALS launch preparations and execute on launch plan

Qualifications

•Neurology/Neuromuscular experience in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) required

•Established network of Key Medical Expert (KME) relationships in ALS

•Experience in area of genetic testing/counseling as well as managing Expanded Access Programs (EAP) is a plus

•Minimum of 3 years of pharmaceutical industry experience is required

•Strong, broad-based scientific and pharmaceutical knowledge as well as excellent presentation and teaching skills

•Strong overall written and verbal communication skills (including but not limited to remote and face to face communication); must be comfortable and confident speaking about drug information/disease state management

•Ability to lead and motivate team members without a direct reporting relationship

•Demonstrated ability to assess issues and think strategically

•Ability to effectively operate in a highly matrixed organization and execute on a One Biogen approach (including regional strategies and engagement planning)

•Ability to work with minimal oversight yet to engage in collaborative decision making, providing transparency and ensuring alignment with key stakeholders as well as ability to complete tasks in a timely fashion, and function in a rapid-paced environment

•Ability to take initiative and solve complex and challenging problems

•Understanding of US regulatory environment and pharmaceutical industry regulations

•Candidate must be willing to travel up to 75% post travel restrictions

Preferred Skills:

•Should be comfortable conducting meetings/remote interactions through video and be comfortable using remote interaction platforms like Teams, Skype, Zoom or similar

•Proficient computer skills including applications for word processing, producing slide materials and working with spreadsheets, proficient with Microsoft programs

•Develop required qualitative and quantitative reports; collates competitor information

Education:

Advanced degree in medical/biosciences (e.g. M.D., Ph.D., Pharm.D., DPH, Ed.D.) or a M.S. level (minimum), trained Genetics Counselor
