Head of Portfolio and Project Management

Delivering on the pipeline is the single greatest priority forGates MRI, ensuring the accelerated progression of productcandidates by applying innovative approaches and best practicesthat have been developed for rich world countries to the Gates MRIportfolio. The Head of Portfolio and Project Management is a keysenior leader who will be responsible for execution of productdevelopment strategies across the organization. The successfulincumbent will be an anticipatory leader who can rapidly assimilatethe needs of the pipeline and the inherent complexity of the GatesMRI programs and platforms, and ensure the organizational focusneeded to drive development.

Reporting to the CMO/Head of Development, the Head of Projectand Portfolio Management is a significant role where credibilitywith senior stakeholders and an ability to constructivelychallenge, influence and set direction is of paramount importance.As such, we are seeking an established leader with a robustunderstanding of product development who can partner with the GatesMRI leadership team and a wide range of global health partners todeliver on the promise of our important pipeline of productcandidates.

Responsibilities and Duties

* The Head of Project and Portfolio Management will beresponsible for leading a group of project managers, some of whomco-lead cross-functional project teams, supporting a portfolio ofproduct candidates from early preclinical development to late stageclinical development and potentially through to productregistration.

* They will be on the CEO's Expanded Leadership Team, serving asa thought partner to the CEO and other leadership team members,regularly presenting progress on the portfolio and tracking metricsof success. He/she will also help to make decisions on the overalloperations of the Gates MRI.

* Working closely with all the functional leaders across theorganization this role will oversee project management forcross-functional product development teams responsible fordevelopment of 2 to 3 candidates each. They will support the PMfunction to provide input on integrated product development planswith an emphasis on development interdependencies across functions,timelines, risks, and risk mitigation activities.

* Leading an established team of project and programprofessionals, he/she will shape and redefine PM excellence bymodeling and driving the desired culture and performance. This willbe achieved through hiring and development of individuals with thetalent, drive, and skills to achieve the Gates MRI mission. Theincumbent will provide input and recommendations on fit-for-purposesystems and the overall operating model for the portfolio andproject management function.

* Working closely with the CEO, the CMO/Head of Development, andthe Head of Translational Discovery, this role will manage theoverall Gates MRI portfolio including evaluating progress andtracking resource requirements. He/she will set priorities andre-evaluate as needed, identifying resource gaps and managementoptions (i.e., trade-offs, delays, additional resources).

* Working closely with Foundation stakeholders and the Gates MRIHead of Research Decision Support , the Head of Portfolio andProject Management will be responsible for the effective transitionof programs supported by the Foundation through grants to the GatesMRI minimizing any delays in programs due to the transition.

* In this role, you will be expected to seek out and embraceinnovative approaches to project management (e.g., use ofelectronic systems for "real time" data transfer across partners)including seeking out best practices from other industries andapplying them to global health applications.

* He/she will support collaborations with a diverse set ofpartners including academia, biotech, pharma, governments, andglobal health product development partners. Partners are locatedglobally including low income countries. He/she will be expected tomanage relationships with the Gates MRI most critical strategicpartners.

* Responsibility for project/portfolio governance, including themonthly Portfolio Review Committee, Asset Strategy Team Charter,transitioning projects into the Gates MRI from the Foundation orother external partners, and the annual refresh of the 4 YearStrategic Plan.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

* 15+ years of relevant industry experience in portfolio andcross-functional project management of product development teamsincluding extensive experience with the planning and execution ofstrategies for drug / vaccine product development

* Experience with multinational partners required

* Advanced scientific degree (Minimum of MS, PharmD or PhD. in arelated scientific field (e.g., chemistry, immunology)

* Certification as a Project Management Professional (PMP)

* Preference for a mix of medium size biotech and pharmaexperience

Technical

* Project management experience through all phases of productdevelopment from translational medicine including early productdevelopment through late stage/pivotal trials. Knowledge ofpreclinical small and large animal models, utilization ofbiomarkers, understanding of assay qualification and validation,and use of quantitative sciences.

* Significant skill in building and maintaining relationshipwith preferred partners, external vendors, and other keystakeholders fostering a sense of "ownership" of the Gates MRImission with these partners (e.g., through sharing responsibilityfor milestones, joint strategic sessions, joint celebrations).

* Sufficient skill and technical understanding of productdevelopment to be a recognized product development leader/expertwithin the global health community.

* Proven strength in structured problem solving across teams andfunctions, strategic business planning, with the ability tosynthesize disparate information and critically analyze complexsituations.

* Able to understand project details and keep overall "bigpicture" view of projects, priorities, and strategies across alarge portfolio.

* Experience with portfolio management and project managementtools and ability to seek out and evaluate new tools as they becomeavailable.

Strategic

* Excels in strategy development both short- and long-term.Anticipates and coaches project managers to anticipateimplementation challenges and have mitigation strategies inplace.

* Proven ability to analyze, integrate, recommend, contribute todevelopment of conceptual plans for and lead implementation ofstrategic, process and team improvements and change initiativesacross the organization.

* Ability to influence without authority within a highlytechnical environment.

* Expert in conflict resolution within and across teams andfunctional areas.

* Strong communicator, both written and verbal. Demonstratesgood judgement on when to escalate issues. Keeps teams, functions,and leadership fully apprised of project/initiative status andissues in a timely fashion.

Organizational Leadership

* Effective at energizing others, establishing clear goals,delegating responsibility, mentoring, and coaching within a teamsetting and managing complex and highly dynamic, technicalorganizations to work collaboratively toward a common vision.

* Knowledge of strategy development and implementation to designperformance management systems consisting of goals, targets, andmonitoring product development process.

* Experienced advisor to senior leadership; with track record ofsignificant contribution to developing strategic planningalternatives.

* Experience building capability, both internally within ownorganization and externally with a range of partners isrequired.

* Ability to attract and retain a team of capable projectmanagers who oversee a portfolio of product development candidatesin multiple stages from preclinical through clinicaldevelopment.

* Experience in the identification of knowledge gaps leading theorganization and analysis efforts to acquire needed data andaddress gaps.

* Capacity to make budget tradeoffs and decisions that driveresource allocation decisions, including both financial and humanresources.

* Experience in pioneering the start-up of new organizations orfunctions is a significant plus.
