Job Description As a senior member of the Clinical Operations Program Leadership (COPL) team and GCO organization, the Global Clinical Operations Portfolio Lead takes broad responsibility for a portfolio of clinical programs within or across assigned disease unit. In this capacity they oversee and provide key strategic and operational leadership in the planning and delivery of GCO support of the portfolio and of the operational innovation that is necessary to optimally execute programs in their assigned disease unit.

As a people leader in GCO, this role provides functional level line management to members of COPL organization to ensure excellence in delivery of the role to the organization as well as the growth and development of our talent.

Responsibilities

Responsible for the development of a function specific (operational) disease area strategy in collaboration and alignment with overall disease area strategy and roadmap

Actively cultivates and maintains relationships with appropriate key internal senior stakeholders across the organization (e.g., Disease unit or program level clinical leadership in Late Stage Development, Early Stage Development, GCO Senior Leaders)

Identifies and recommends appropriate capabilities or strategic investments or innovation opportunities to support the disease area portfolio. May lead, drive or oversee the implementation of the same.

GCO disease area champion. Take high level responsibility for creating and communicating a compelling disease area awareness, vision, and momentum within the GCO organization.

Facilitates communication between the disease area and the GCO function from strategic, planning, and delivery perspectives

Regularly reports on progress again overall GCO owned goals related to the delivery of programs and studies in the assigned area(s) (timeline, budget, quality)

In collaboration with disease area and GCO leadership evaluates and communicates GCO resource needs to support disease area goals and ensures GCO fulfillment against approved resource plans

Provides guidance and oversight to individuals in the COPL organization leading relevant programs on GCO operational strategy and execution inclusive of leading opportunities for efficiencies or lessons across programs in the same disease areas

Participates as a representative of GCO Senior Management at Biogen governance and decision-making forums (e.g., EDGC, TRC, and various GCO governance forums) to ensure overarching disease area objectives are being communicated and addressed

Reviews and provides management-level input into key deliverables from the COPL organization (e.g., materials and documents for key governance forums)

Point of escalation from the clinical program level within GCO and for external stakeholders (key vendors, management in other parts of the Biogen organization)

Provides strategic input in the evaluation and planning for late stage business opportunities (e.g., diligence reviews) or identifies and oversees appropriate individuals within the COPL organization to support evaluation and recommendations

Portfolio Leadership with vendors, particularly with vendors/ CRO partners

Establish disease area GCO portfolio standards and norms. Including but not limited to communication planning, elements of study conduct, site /KOL interface.

Line Management for members of the COPL organization. Responsible for performance management and optimization of members of the COPL team to achieve a consistently highly performing effective COPL team.

Effectively coaches to ensure ongoing growth and development of both direct and matrix reports

Evaluates designated therapeutic area for any desirable experiences or skill sets for COPLs on the programs

Resource for operational and strategic expertise and guidance for the delivery of study and clinical programs

Evaluates designated therapeutic area for desired skillsets

Works with HR to recruit and evaluate key talent

Collaborates with colleagues in COPL Leadership team to set and embed norms and skill sets for the COPL role(s)

As a leader in GCO and COPL actively contributes to creating a culture of excellence

Collaborates within COPL Leadership team in resource planning and assignments

Actively contributes to the development of the necessary process, tools and standards necessary establish world class COPL and GCO organization

Represents the GCO organization as needed in important organizational initiative and projects. May lead critical initiatives or projects

Note: In additional to portfolio and people responsibilities Team Leaders may be called upon to manage individual clinical programs. In which case they take on the additional responsibilities outlined for a Director, Clinical Operations Program Leadership

Qualifications Undergraduate degree in a scientific or health related discipline. Advanced scientific or business degree or equivalent experience (MS/PhD/PharmD/MBA /MPH) preferred.

15-20+ years clinical operations/drug development experience in a global biotech or pharmaceutical setting

Proven track record leading operational strategy and delivery for complex clinical programs across various phases of development

Prior portfolio or disease level accountability for multiple programs or disease areas at the program level

Line management experience for mid to senior level reports (Director level and above)

Expertise leveraging data to develop, analyze and evaluate strategic scenarios (operational strategy)

Proven ability to build and influence a network in a complex matrix setting

Track record managing senior stakeholder and executive management from a wide range of disciplines
