The Broad Institute is looking for an experienced and passionate engineer to help us build researcher tools that will enable the next decade of scientific discovery in human medicine. In this role, you'd be a senior engineer on the Customer Delivery team within the Data Sciences Platform (DSP). The DSP is a core part of the Broad Institute, a deeply-collaborative scientific institution that is transforming medicine and human health by building software solutions to process and analyze scientific data on an unprecedented scale. Our customers are large-scale institutions (government, academic and foundations) that partner with us to generate clinical and genomic data, build new algorithms and make it all available to researchers through our open-sourced analysis platform. We routinely partner with organizations across the biomedical ecosystem and scientists in our own backyard.-- On this team, you will be one of two engineers dedicated to improving the researcher experience in Terra ( ). Terra is a flexible platform for scientific discovery that allows researchers to perform data analysis in the cloud at previously unattainable scales. Scientists at the Broad use this platform every day to power their world-renown scientific and medical research. This team aims to improve the overall user experience by having a deep understanding of product user behavior and pain points, in order to deliver incremental features and functionality improvements in Terra over time. The team will collaborate deeply with product, engineering, and UX teams within the DSP, ensuring transparency, and communication across teams. The right candidate will enjoy engaging with researchers who use Terra to better understand their experiences, and how to improve them. You will be working in a progressive, supportive engineering environment where experimentation and failure are valued because of their contribution to growth and innovation.-- Your role would include: Engaging with researchers who use Terra to acquire understanding of how the product is used, and user pain points Implementation of incremental feature and functionality improvements to the Terra code base, based on user feedback Collaborating with your teammates across product, engineering, and UX teams Incorporating our excellent design and user experience team's work into our React-based UI Ensuring the simplicity, transparency, and observability of our engineering work so we can respond quickly to changing user needs We expect an engineer at this level to have substantial and diverse background experience. At a minimum, you are: Experienced building backend applications or APIs backed by a relational database Proficient in both object-oriented and functional programming Able to apply good engineering principles to a complex software system-- A good communicator and collaborative team member A humble and caring person Optionally, but ideally, you are also: Proficient in React Experienced in both threaded and event-based architectures Experienced working on both small and large engineering teams Experience in genetics or biology is great, but not necessary to succeed in this role.
