CarpenterDepartment: OperationsReports to: Director of
MaintenanceFLSA Status: Non-ExemptUnion: LIUNASummary The primary
purpose of this position is to perform a large variety of skilled
tasks related to the carpenter's craft. An incumbent must have the
ability to perform new work construction as well as perform
structural repairs to current buildings and construct or repair
furniture. All activities must support the Cambridge Housing
Authority's ("Authority" or "CHA") strategic goals and objectives
and produce results that accomplish the goals of the Operations
department. QualificationsTo perform this job successfully, an
individual must be able to perform each essential duty
satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of
the knowledge, skills, and/or ability required. Reasonable

to perform the essential functions. Education and/or ExperienceHigh
school diploma, GED or possession of a vocational technical
certification beyond high school and 5 to 7 years of experience in
all aspects of building maintenance and construction. Ability to
follow structural drawings and ability to utilize all carpenter
tools are desirable. Working knowledge of the Massachusetts
Building Code is a plus. Must have valid Massachusetts driver's
license and be insurable under CHA policies. An equivalent
combination of education and experience may be considered. Must be
able to successfully pass the Carpenter's Test. Technical SkillsTo
perform this job successfully, an individual should have a strong
background in math, measurements and safety as well as strong
technical and construction skills, including framing walls and
partitions, installing doors and windows, building stairs, and
installing cabinets and molding. Essential Duties and
ResponsibilitiesThe below statements describe the general nature
and scope of work being performed by this position. This is not a
complete listing of all responsibilities, duties and/or skills
required. Other duties may be assigned.
- Utilizes on a regular basis general machines and hand tools,
including, but not limited to table saws, band saws, carpenter
squares, belt sanders, drill presses, and routers
- Installs all types of stairs, kitchen cabinets, counter tops,
door frames, and windows of standard and nonstandard sizes
- Lifts heavy objects and works with and without assistance
- Performs renovations and new work construction, erects rough
framing and completes finish trim
- Designs, fabricates and installs finished business office
furniture such as shelves, bookcases and tables
- Maintains tools, materials and work space in a neat and orderly
manner, observing all Authority and OSHA safety regulations

- Knowledge of policies, procedures, goals, objectives,
operational entities, requirements and activities as they apply to
the assigned area of responsibility in the CHA
- Extensive knowledge of all applicable federal and municipal
building, construction and property maintenance laws, regulations
and codes
- Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards and corresponding
OSHA safety precautions necessary for safe performance of assigned
duties
- Extensive knowledge of architectural and structural principals
and techniques
- In depth knowledge of general construction of residential and
high rise structures
- Ability to read and interpret blue print drawings
- Ability to read and understand moderately complex repair and
service manuals, diagrams, and instructions/warnings
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships with employees, officials, suppliers and the general
public
- Must be available for emergency overtime duty as required
