Job Summary: Assist in the preparation of human surgical specimens and perform other assigned duties to ensure optimal patient care and the safety and efficiency of the Pathology Department.

Job Description:

The CHA laboratory provides a wide range of services, from routine blood and urine tests to special tissue evaluation. As a Pathologist's Assistant, you will play a critical role in ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of these services.

Responsibilities:


  • Accurately and efficiently provide gross descriptions of all surgical specimens
  • Use Dragon Voice recognition software to dictate reports and troubleshoot issues
  • Dissect tissue and prepare it for processing, printing cassettes as needed
  • Complete worksheets for each specimen, ensuring accurate and efficient data entry
  • Perform frozen sections with staining and delivery of frozen section slides within acceptable time limits
  • Prepare touch preps and stains slides as needed
  • Provide high-quality photographs of gross specimens and microscopic slides
  • Deliver tissue, hardware, or other foreign bodies to doctors' offices or patients as needed
  • Assist in the printing of proofs of dictation and other patient information as needed
  • Load specimens on the processor as needed


    Gross Room Quality Control and Equipment Maintenance:


    • Perform daily and monthly instrument procedures according to department schedules and protocols
    • Troubleshoot and resolve quality control failures and instrument failures
    • Maintain an adequate supply of inventory at all times
    • Ensure the grossing room is kept clean and organized
    • Monitor temperature-dependent equipment and manage chemical hazardous waste


      Team Skills:


      • Participate in the team effort to efficiently complete all required department work within the appropriate time interval
      • Analyze work processes and contribute to the team effort to improve workflow as needed
      • Participate in committee and task force team meetings as assigned
      • Attend and participate in department meetings, read minutes, and complete assigned follow-up tasks
      • Train new employees by accurately conveying information on policies and procedures
      • Support department initiatives with technical knowledge and active participation


        Administrative Responsibilities:


        • Assist in the organization and coordination of anatomic pathology conferences
        • Assist in the preparation of documents and tissue for send-out cases as needed
        • Assist pathologists in the preparation for accreditation inspections
        • Write technical procedures as needed in accordance with established technical guidelines


          Safety:


          • Keep work area disinfected by washing surfaces with appropriate disinfectant at frequent intervals
          • Understand and apply principles in the Laboratory Bloodborne Pathogen Control Plan
          • Understand and apply principles in the Laboratory Chemical Hygiene Plan
          • Demonstrate adequate knowledge of disaster responses and laboratory safety policies


            Minimum Qualifications:


            • Minimum of a Baccalaureate degree in biomedical or health sciences
            • Completion of NAACLS accredited Pathologist's Assistant program required
            • Current Pathologist's Assistant certification through the American Society for Clinical Pathology required
            • 3 or more years of experience in a clinical pathology setting preferred
            • Dictation experience and experience with Voice recognition software preferred
            • Knowledge of human anatomy and medical terminology
            • Knowledge of Universal precautions, chemical safety guidelines, and basic laboratory safety
            • Knowledge of gross pathology
            • Fluent in the English language
            • Effective interpersonal and communication skills
