Spaulding Hospital Cambridge:

Spaulding Hospital Cambridge (SHC) is a Long-Term Acute Care (LTAC) specialty hospital. Our patients have complex medical issues that require dedicated and focused services for weeks to months, depending on their medical needs. Due to our high patient acuity, SHC functions as a step-down unit to the ICUs within the MGB system, from where patients can be accepted directly for admission. Patient census at SHC averages around 116 with about 95% on an active therapy program. The average LOS at SHC is 32 days but could run from 2 weeks to 2 years. Our adult patient population ranges in age from 18 to over 100 years old. The hospital is comprised of 6 units in total, two units on each floor: The 2nd floor is comprised of Oncology and Transplant units; 3rd floor is comprised of Ventilator Weaning and Cardio-Pulmonary units; 4th floor is comprised of Neurological and Complex Medical units.

Position Summary

Working under the direct supervision of a licensed OTR, PT, COTA, PTA or SLP, rehab aides are to provide routine direct patient care treatment programs, clerical duties, and light housekeeping activities to support the care of patients and the efficiency of the operation. Rehab AIdes may also conduct individual aide programs that the therapists have established and trained the aides on. Many of SHC's full time rehab aides are employees, interested in pursuing a career in PT, OT, SLP, PA, NP, Nursing or med school who are looking to gain inpatient patient care experience to assist with their applications to graduate school programs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct patient care treatment programs, such as range of motion and exercise programs, ADLs, ambulation, bed mobility, endurance training, and application of superficial modalities, fabrication of adaptive equipment, carryover of positioning techniques, and carryover of use of assistive devices are carried out in accordance with professional guidelines.
  • Patient objective and subjective responses to treatment is observed and accurately recorded. Any changes are immediately reported to appropriate team member.
  • Clerical activities are performed, including recording services rendered to the patient, answering the phone, filing, and data entry to help the patient and facility run efficiently.
  • Cleanliness and organization of assigned areas is maintained and routine cleaning of equipment is performed per department guidelines.
  • Light housekeeping activities including changing linen, laundry, and other duties are completed to meet established objectives.
  • Documentation to support reimbursement is completed within organizational and regulatory guidelines.
  • Additional department, organization, or network activities are completed per established objectives.

    Anticipated Schedule:

    The position is a 40 hour a week position working Monday through Friday 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM or 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM. We do require that all rehab aides to work 1 weekend day per month.

    Education/Degree

    Required

    * High school diploma or equivalent required.

    Preferred

    * Bachelor's Degree or enrolled in Allied Health Program preferred.

    Experience

    Preferred

    * Experience in hospital or outpatient setting is desirable.

    Skills (Specific learned activity gained through training (e.g. computer skills, keyboarding, presentation, CPR, ACLS, etc.)

    Required

    • Effective verbal and written communication skills with English.
    • Basic skills in math and computer science.
    • Basic skills at establishing interpersonal relationships with patients, families, and staff.
    • Computer proficiency required. Microsoft office applications preferred with ability to learn new software.
      Preferred

      • Highly developed communications and interpersonal skills, working with diverse population.
      • Work independently, be self-directed and contribute as a member of a team.
      • Anticipates challenges and develops and implements strategies for addressing them.
      • High level of service delivery. Demonstrate initiative with ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines and adapt to changing situations.
      • Attention to detail.
