Additional Qualifications and Skills:
+ A Master's degree or equivalent in Social Work, Education,
Non-Profit Management, or a related field is preferred but not
required.
+ Some experience in after-school or youth development settings is
preferred. Connections to Boston and Cambridge community partners
through professional or lived experience are invaluable in this
position.
+ Preferred Five years of experience working in community-based
organizations, schools, or related organizations in the public
sector in Boston.
+ Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, intermediate Excel
skills
+ Ability to work with students, student organizations, colleagues,
clients, and external organizations
+ Communication skills (both written and verbal)
Additional Information:
The Phillips Brooks House Association seeks a Director of Programs
to support its student-led public service programs. The Director of
Programs of the Phillips Brooks House Association (PBHA) is
supervised by the Deputy Director of PBHA. The Director of Programs
is a member of the Phillips Brooks House Department which reports
to the Faculty Director of the Phillips Brooks Center for Public
Service and Engaged Scholarship.
The Director of Programs has four core functions: 1) serving as the
coach for a quarter of the Phillips Brooks House Association's
seventy-plus programs; 2) building and maintaining relationships
with community partners in neighborhoods in Boston and Cambridge;
3) stewarding quality standards and improvement for a focus area
(e.g. after school, mentoring, housing, adult services) in
partnership with student leaders, 4) coaching, mentoring, training
students to direct service programs including after schools and
homeless shelters.
The Director of Programs supervises a cohort of 15-20 programs.
Directors of Programs ensure high-quality programming through
direct supervision and coaching of college student program
directors. They have primary responsibility for proactive program
design and delivery, and for incident response. Directors of
Programs are responsible for overseeing safety & liability,
community partnerships, program quality, and human resources.
Directors of Programs support emerging college student leaders to
build the hard and soft skills they need for program and non-profit
management.
Directors of Programs collaborate with the Manager of Student
Development and Evaluation, the Deputy Director, and student
leaders to achieve the dual mission of meeting community needs and
developing student leaders. Beyond these core duties, the Director
of Programs also supports PBHA organizational goals and projects.
They also work closely with Center for Public Service Department
staff and other colleagues at Harvard on department
initiatives.

Position Description:
Direct Program Coaching
Directors of program coach portfolios of 12-18 programs. Coaching
includes
+ Supervision of directors of 2-3 licensed summer day camps (ensure
compliance with safety and liability standards, oversee training
development and delivery, provide on-site supervision)
+ Manage hiring and supervision of senior and junior staff for
summer programming (40-60 staff)
+ Oversee school year student directors to support for strategic
planning and assessment of impact through regular meetings
including semesterly goal setting and debriefing sessions and site
visits
+ Facilitate training and reflection for program directors and
volunteer
+ Manage and resolve program crises and incidents accounting for
all stakeholders (constituents, institutions, government, student
leaders)
+ Ensure data quality for participant and volunteer enrollments
&afety and liability standards are met at all sitesOversee
program budgets and approved expenses.
+ Uphold minimum health and safety standards as outlined in PBHA &
Harvard policies and federal, state, and municipal guidelines
+ Facilitate funding strategies for programs and ensure access to
needed resources including managing contracts and ensuring timely
reporting
+ Remain accessible, on-call, for directors during all program
hours. Including overnight and weekends, when applicable
+ Supervise part-time youth worker/ guard staff who conduct intake
screenings and ensure safety at PBHA's homeless shelters
Community Relationships
+ Establish and maintain integrity of relationships between
programs and community partners
+ Serve as liaison and primary contact for PBHA with community
leaders and community-based organizations in assigned
neighborhoods. Directors of Programs ten to serve as liaisons to
2-3 neighborhoods
+ Manage constituent concerns and requests
+ Connect students with community partners and initiatives
+ Facilitate constituent access to community resources
Cross Program Quality Assurance
+ Maintain expertise in assigned affinity groups (after school,
mentoring, adult services, advocacy, health & housing) through
ongoing professional development and engagement with community
leaders and learning cohorts
+ Provide & manage technical assistance and training for programs
in assigned affinity cohorts (e.g. after-school, mentoring, adult
services, etc.)
+ Support designated Program Group Officer (student officer) in
coordinating relevant training, reflection, evaluation, and
discussions for corresponding Program Affinity Group (e.g.
mentoring, afterschool, adult services, advocacy, and housing)
+ Coordinate cross-program service initiatives and group-wide
grants in Program Affinity Group specialty area. (E.g. housing
awareness week, annual Halloween Party, etc.)
+ Direct cross-program support responsibilities including, but not
limited to program licensing, PBHA events, and student development
initiatives
Student Development
+ Facilitate personal and professional development of student
volunteers.
+ Provide one on one and group reflection opportunities for
directors and volunteers
+ Support students to navigate public service career pathways
(letters of recommendation, alumni connections, community
introductions, etc.)
+ Support college students to navigate emerging adulthood by
providing one on one reflection opportunities and support to
facilitate personal and professional development.
Organizational Support
+ Build and sustain relevant information systems to maintain
institutional memory
+ Work with Student Officers and Staff to set and follow through on
priorities and semesterly objectives
+ Collaborate with other Harvard organizations in student and
program support efforts
+ Performs other duties and projects as assigned
