Job Summary

This is an exciting opportunity to join our team of experienced, dedicated, and passionate sustainability professionals working to advance solutions to global and local sustainability challenges, using Harvard's campus as a testbed to scale solutions and drive change at Harvard and beyond. The Director will develop and implement a communications strategy that strengthens Harvard University's position as one of the world's leading institutions in addressing institutional sustainability and climate change.
Reporting to the Director of Communications and Outreach, Public Affairs , Harvard Public Affairs and Communications, (HPAC) and the Managing Director of OFS, this role will work closely with OFS's senior staff, and in coordination with HPAC and other communications colleagues across the University. In close collaboration with colleagues and key stakeholders, the Director will lead in creating and communicating the University's strategy related to institutional sustainability and climate action, while also highlighting links to research, teaching and content across the University, including the Salata Institute for Climate and Sustainability. The Director will implement the communications strategy through clear, concise writing including executive briefings, case studies and white papers in addition to responding to media inquiries and overseeing the University's sustainability website, social media, digital platforms (e.g., such as Twitter, Instagram, YouTube), print and broadcast media. In performing this work, the Director will supervise a small staff and vendors handling web/digital design and social media and advise Schools and units on their sustainability communications.

-Position Description

  • Lead, develop, maintain and steward the creation of -a comprehensive annual communications strategy with consistent branding to advance - the University's institutional sustainability vision, priorities, goals and work to scale solutions on our 27 million square foot campus located in Cambridge and Boston, and beyond.
  • Produce executive level communications for different audiences, both internal and external, including, but not limited to, briefings and memos, talking points, reports, presentations, press releases and stories related to flagship programs and projects to meet our climate and sustainability goals and priorities.
  • Proactively showcase scalable, credible institutional solutions strategies developed by OFS in partnership with faculty, students, staff and external partners that translate research into action on climate change and sustainable development goals, including demonstration projects, case studies, white papers, data visualizations, stories and other media forms.
  • Create a communications and media strategy or public relations campaign, as appropriate, in collaboration with HPAC and School colleagues, on key announcements.
  • Foster and maintain relationships with reporters, editors, and producers with an interest in climate and sustainability to amplify our work, and serve as the lead on both incoming media inquiries and proactive media outreach, coordinating with HPAC and School colleagues,
  • Work with the OFS team to create a reporting strategy including developing an approach to transparently report and communicate University progress toward goals and targets.
  • Oversee management of the Sustainability at Harvard website and social media channels.
  • Proactively lead, collaborate, advise and execute on communications planning with HPAC and other communications colleagues across the University.
  • Manage a small team, including a Communications Officer, and external consultants.
  • Continually assess the effectiveness of different communications strategies and mechanisms and proactively recommend optimal communications strategies.
  • Other duties related to the role as needed. Basic Qualifications
    • Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 10 years of experience in public relations, communications, or journalism with increasing job responsibilities. - Additional Qualifications and Skills
      • Advanced degree in communications, journalism, public relations or related field, and/or relevant work experience strongly preferred.
      • Experience communicating on climate change and sustainability topics strongly preferred.
      • Experience with developing successful strategic communications plans and demonstrated effective internal and external communications with experience managing press relations.
      • Demonstrated excellence in writing, editing and knowledge of different media platforms (digital, social, etc.).
      • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, provide sound strategic communications advice, and demonstrate excellent judgment and advising on complex issues.
      • Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines, as well as the ability to work successfully both independently and as part of a team.
      • Must have the ability to innovate, think strategically and conceptually, listen carefully as well as to influence and persuade others. The position requires an extremely high level of professionalism, sound and mature judgment, and collegiality.
      • Prefer connections with media outlets focused on climate, energy, & sustainability communications.
      • Demonstrated experience building/leading communications teams and managing staff.
      • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity, equity and contributing to an inclusive work and learning environment. Additional Information This -position will be based at our campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts. -Our office is currently working on a hybrid schedule, with a minimum of three days per week on campus and the remaining days working remotely. However, it is possible that this arrangement may change. -Complying with the office's work location requirements is a condition of continued employment. -All remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CT, MA, MD, ME, NH, NY, RI, and VT). -
