ROLE SUMMARYReporting to the CSO, Anti-Infectives Research Unit (A-IRU), this role is responsible for developing the strategy and leading the execution of the A-IRU's portfolio through POC. - This role is accountable for making appropriate, nimble scientific & investment decisions for optimal progression of a portfolio of projects through:

  • Leading a focused group of senior scientists that serve as Research Project Leaders, driving the program strategies and execution in collaboration with the A-IRU
  • Taking accountability for review of appropriate regulatory documentation, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and quality in the representation of data.
  • Leading a team responsible for all operational and compliance aspects of the RU, including assisting with scientific advisory panels, KOL panels, collaborations, facilities management, data quality, and CRO relationships.
  • Lead player in working with the CSO, A-IRU LT, commercial, and Global Product Development organizations in defining the near and longer-term A-I strategy.
  • Being accountable for scoping and integrating external science for portfolio optimization
  • Displaying flexibility in responding to urgent portfolio and business needs, through integrating key inputs to define a path forward.
  • Managing strategic out-sourcing of scientific services to ensure effective project resourcing.
  • Providing strong crossline leadership to build alignment on project strategy and execution, influencing partner lines and achieving alignment on resourcing for A-IRU projects
  • Driving A-IRU portfolio governance decisions that promote the best path toward achieving RU goals
  • Representing the A-IRU in interactions with the broader A-I category on asset and disease area strategies, working across organizational boundaries to ensure end-to-end developmentThis role requires a strategic thinker with the ability to execute, manage multiple priorities, pay attention to detail while responding to tight timelines, collaborate across organizational boundaries, and enhance existing processes or implement new ones, where appropriate.ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Responsible for developing an aligned strategy and the integrated progression of A-IRU projects from target generation through delivery to the A-I Medicine Business Unit.
    • Accountable for working with the teams to prioritize clinical investments and build funding plans, to enable delivery of a world class anti-infectives portfolio.
    • Focuses project teams on scientific quality, innovation and creating value for effective delivery
    • Guides staff in diversified fields, balancing pragmatism and innovation consistent with the Research strategy to enable optimal project progression
    • Develops talent in team and across the A-IRU
    • Leverages drug discovery/development experience to provide real time problem solving and strategic input to teams on project issues. - Influences project teams to identify acceleration opportunities as well as key programmatic risks. Builds robust project strategies that both mitigate risk and maximize the opportunity to deliver first in class therapies. Advises rapid response teams (regulatory, DSRD, etc) on critical project issues.
    • Drives the A-IRU portfolio agenda at key strategic leadership meetings -(e.g. EAC, BOD, TASAP, Lightspeed Meetings)
    • Serves as the CSO's primary advisor in all matters of drug development, including strategic and operational issuesQUALIFICATIONS
      • PhD, MD PhD or equivalent with at least 15 years industry experience
      • Demonstrated successful leadership of both direct report and matrixed teams
      • Proven track record of leading multi-disciplinary project teams across all stages of discovery and early development for successful delivery
      • Hands on experience of writing and delivering regulatory documents to support clinical development
      • Superior breadth and depth of knowledge regarding A-I therapeutic areas
      • Advanced strategic planning and business analysis experience required
      • Demonstratedbiopharmaceutical business acumen, with strong written and oral communication skills and the
        • capability to interact with all levels of the organization in a professional and discrete manner
        • Demonstrated ability to be a change agent within a senior leadership team working across disciplines
        • Successful coach and mentor; motivates others to maintain a consistent level of excellence in project management and outcomes
        • Demonstrated ability to transform creative ideas into finished products that are impactful; proven ability to develop a range of creative solutions to business challenges

          • Reports to the CSO and is a member of the A-IRU leadership team
          • Supervises scientific leaders and research project leaders
          • Builds effective partnerships with appropriate leaders of Medicinal Sciences, (Med Chem, PDM, PharmSci), DSRD, GPD, Commercial, WSR and Medical Affairs
