Harvard University seeks a leader with exceptional strategic, operational, and interpersonal skills to lead the Campus Services team as Vice President for Campus Services. The Vice President is responsible for the leadership and executive direction of essential operational services to the University's schools and departments in a highly decentralized management environment. -
Campus Services at Harvard serves as a part of the central administration with a goal to advance Harvard's mission of teaching and research, by partnering to provide stewardship, strategies, and services that create exceptional community experiences. The scope of responsibilities of the Vice President for Campus Services (VPCS) includes oversight of and accountability for a large array of operating service departments, including facilities services and property management, sustainability services, capital projects, residential and commercial real estate management, dining and hospitality, engineering and utilities, transportation and parking, global support services and international student/scholar services, and environmental health and safety. The overarching objective of these units is to ensure that essential services and critical infrastructure are organized appropriately and function with the highest possible effectiveness in support of the University's academic mission.

Campus Services departments are primarily self-supporting, fee-based business operations, consisting of approximately 1,800 employees (70% of staff are represented by eight unions) and with annual revenues of $540 million and a capital budget of $930 million over the next five years. Operations in real estate, parking and plants cover approximately 7.6 million square feet of campus and provide essential services to the Harvard community under market-based, competitive cost structures.

The VPCS is a member of the senior management team of the Executive Vice President and works closely and collaboratively with other senior leaders across the campus including deans, vice-presidents, and senior managers. Responsibilities include leading and participating in a variety of University and school initiatives and programs, serving on ad-hoc committees, and advising senior leadership on policy issues. This role is dynamic, and the scope of responsibilities is broad and likely to evolve to meet the needs of the University.

The VPCS leads the University's emergency management program, including supporting the Crisis Management Team, an interdisciplinary group of senior managers from across the University providing support and coordination under the University Emergency Management Plan. -

- Position Description The Vice President for Campus Services is responsible for the following:

Leadership and Management

  • The delivery of a broad scope of services, asset management, and numerous other key functions essential to the University's operations while ensuring the organizational design supports functional and University priorities. Maximizing opportunities for administrative and overhead efficiencies,
  • Developing and overseeing a high performing team of senior management professionals with specific expertise in areas of responsibility and harnessing the synergies among the various service units. - Strategic Planning
    • Initiating and leading strategic planning efforts to ensure that the University is maximizing opportunities for efficiency in delivery of campus services, and that investments in University-wide infrastructures are optimized.
    • Directing the University Office for Sustainability to ensure that the University remains at the forefront of environmental sustainability. As part of the University's goal to be fossil-fuel free by 2050, leading the planning and implementation process for conversion of district energy facilities to alternative fuels. Compliance and Risk Management
      • Directing the University's emergency management program. Leading a broad-based interdisciplinary team of senior leaders from across the University in coordinating incident management. Functioning as the primary liaison with the executive-level Crisis Management Team.
      • Overseeing all University environmental and safety programs. Coordinating development of University-wide policies with the schools, administrative departments, and other stakeholders to ensure continued high levels of compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
      • Overseeing Harvard Global Support Services, which provides operational guidance and resources to students, faculty and staff traveling or managing projects abroad. Service Delivery
        • Collaborating closely with colleagues in the schools and other units to establish effective service delivery, financial models, and standards that support the overall goals of the University. -
        • Establishing appropriate organizational structures to deliver services efficiently and consistent with the expectations and requirements of University clients and customers. Develops and maintains a high-performing management team and qualified staff at all levels. Facilitating the development of long-range administrative and financial plans for all units in concert with the schools and other central departments.

          Asset Management
          • Ownership, leasing, and property management of the University's non-academic real estate properties; developing, strengthening, and preserving those properties, including offices, residential facilities, and commercial properties. to include:
              • Housing for graduate students and other Harvard affiliates, including over 4,400 beds located in 108 individual buildings comprising 72 residential complexes, with a total of 3.2 million gross square feet .
              • Portfolio of University and commercial properties totaling 3.7 million square feet of space in 102 buildings. This includes office, retail, hotel, special purpose facilities, and commercial properties acquired for future institutional use.
              • Managing University relationships with the Harvard Square business and retail community.
              • Directing the capital planning, development and management of the University's parking facilities and transportation system for the Cambridge and Allston campuses.
              • Overseeing strategic planning and investment in the University's energy and utilities infrastructure for the Cambridge and Allston campuses, including energy plants and distribution systems.
              • Coordinating investment decisions in the acquisition, disposition, and development of properties with Schools and other strategic planning and development groups. Basic Qualifications The position requires proven executive and leadership skills necessary to manage both the immediacy of daily operations and a long-term strategic vision in support of the University's mission of teaching and research. -

                • A demonstrated track record of effective leadership and collaboration with various constituents at all levels and ranges of expertise .
                • A deep commitment to customer service and a track record of leading high performance service delivery teams defined by a results-oriented culture of excellence and responsiveness.
                • Demonstrated ability and commitment to cultivating a work environment that is equitable and inclusive of faculty, staff, and students from diverse cultural backgrounds and social identities.
                • Effective written and presentation skills, proven financial acumen and negotiation skills, a creative bent and innovative approach to problem solving,
                • A minimum of 15 years of progressive growth in management and specific executive experience in one or more of the service areas within the scope of responsibilities of the position. Experience in an academic or other non-profit environment is preferred but not required.
