bluebird bio, a US-based 500+ person biotechnology company, is seeking a seasoned Head of People and Culture to join our team of 20. This is not your traditional "HR" role--we are different than any other place you've been. We're committed, mission-driven, passionate, with crazy smart people in a very fast-paced, ever-evolving and "exceptions are the rule" environment. In this hands-on leadership role, you will lead our high energy People and Culture team, help us scale to the next level of growth, and thrive in ambiguity and change. Reporting to our CEO and as a member of the bluebird Leadership Team, you will lead the People and Culture function and be responsible for nurturing and evolving our incredible culture and developing innovative people initiatives to align to our overall strategies, mission, and values.

You'll scale the company and our hiring processes commensurate with the growth plans with a critical eye towards a high talent bar and keeping things simple - we are not looking to add bureaucracy or slow things down. What may have worked in another company will not necessarily work here. Remember, we're different!

Key responsibilities for this role include overseeing culture development, attracting, retaining and developing amazing talent, leveraging a data driven approach to people strategies, supporting and developing a highly committed and high performing team, and providing partnership to the leadership team and all of our birds.

  • Define, evolve and ensure execution of bluebird's People strategies to enable our growth and our transition to a fully-integrated company that reflects our core values-b colorful, b cooperative, b yourself. Develop specific strategies across all aspects of People and Culture including Recruiting and Talent Operations; People Partnering; Learning & Development; Total Rewards, Benefits, HRIS & People Analytics; Culture and DEI.
  • Drive employee engagement through the refinement and evolution of bluebird's culture.
  • Be a strong partner to our executive leaders in developing strategies to increase the impact of our people across the organization and the evolution of the organization to support future needs, including succession planning and organizational development approaches.
  • Continue to build bluebird as a compelling and engaging employer.
  • Drive organizational improvements leveraging our culture and pulse surveys.
  • Architect an extraordinary employee experience at bluebird to create an environment where each bird can do their best work.
  • Ensure we're focusing on the right things that make real differences to our future goals from a people perspective.
  • Attract new talent and lead a high performing People & Culture team to meet the demands of the entire organization transitioning to a revenue-generating company as we anticipate several drug approvals.
  • In partnership with key stakeholders, assist in the development and implementation of workforce planning and strategies.
  • Support bluebird's D&I efforts through the development of ongoing, engaging talent initiatives.
  • Partner with corporate communications on employee communications strategies and initiatives. Heavy involvement in creating themes for annual employee offsite.
  • Engage with the Board of Directors on talent strategies and implications for the business. Lead the compensation committee to ensure alignment between compensation, talent, and business strategies. Create thematic presentations to Board quarterly and for annual Board offsite.
    Minimum Requirements
    • 15+ years of progressive business and HR experience, preferably in high growth and commercial biotech or technology environments
    • Track record of innovation in employee and candidate experience, employment branding, talent events, messaging, best practices
    • Established and demonstrated leadership and strategic thinking skills
    • Ability to develop a creative, thoughtful and relevant vision for people strategies across bluebird
    • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively engage, connect, and communicate with diverse audiences with heart and warmth.
    • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment where results are achieved through influence, cooperation, and the incorporation of multiple points of view
    • Independently motivated, detail oriented and good problem-solving ability
    • Excellent leader of people with a commitment to development and mentorship
    • Excellent organizational skills, with an ability to embrace change and multi-task in an extremely fast-paced environment
    • Excellent communications skills and ability to influence across multiple functions
