Job Description:

Director of the Advising Programs Office Faculty of Arts and Sciences 53512BR Job Summary Oversee administration for student service operations including the development, organization, management, and implementation of all programs and events for students and student organizations. Job-Specific Responsibilities Reporting to the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education, the Director leads the Advising Programs Office (APO) and collaborates with other members of the APO team on programs that serve the academic advising mission of Harvard College. The primary mission of the APO is to maintain and improve the quality of academic advising at Harvard by working closely with the Office of Undergraduate Education, the residential Houses/Yards, the Dean of Students Office, the Registrar's Office, and other constituents to create trainings and programs for advisers. The Director of the APO is expected to provide strategic leadership and to clearly communicate the APO's and the College's values and goals for academic advising to the APO staff and other constituents. The Director of the APO will work with the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education to lead the office in new directions in accordance with the mission of Harvard College. This position directly supervises the Assistant Directors and the Program Administrator. The Director collaborates with the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education on strategic planning and assessment and with the Assistant Directors on the enhancement/design/implementation of existing and new programs in all areas of academic advising.-- Specific duties include:-- Designing and providing training and resources about advising best practices and academic advising at Harvard College for all College advisers, including the Board of First-Year Advisers, Peer Advising Fellows, House-based advisers (including Sophomore Advisers and Sophomore Advising Coordinators)-- Creating and developing new programs and initiatives to support College staff in advising roles in their work with undergraduates.-- Assessing new and ongoing programs to ensure their alignment with the academic goals of Harvard College.-- Using quantitative and qualitative data to identify the full range of academic advising needs of all Harvard undergraduates, who come from an increasingly broad range of high schools and backgrounds.-- Providing leadership for APO staff.-- Overseeing APO administration and budget in collaboration with the Assistant Director of Administration.-- Regularly reporting on the activities of the Advising Programs Office and setting future goals.-- Other duties as assigned by the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education. Typical Core Duties

  • Responsible for effective staff management, including hiring and orientation, training and development, workflow and performance management, and the promotion of an inclusive and innovative work environment
  • Oversee the design and implementation of programs to enhance the quality of the student experience; manage processes, outreach, content and finances
  • Provide individual and group advising in support of students' well-being, success and completion of degree requirements
  • Provide student organizations with guidance and advising including training, strategic planning, financial oversight, and policy and procedures
  • Oversee the implementation of events, seminars, and conferences including developing content and structure, publicity, coordination with other Harvard offices and groups and logistical details
  • Develop reports, analyze data and trends to refine procedures, policies and practice
  • May plan and manage departmental budget
  • May review accommodation request and determine eligibility
  • May serve as primary contact for students in regards to Title IX; disseminate information about policies, manage and keep track of cases and provide guidance and support to students
  • Collaborate with leadership to continuously improve student services policies
  • Develop and implement operational policies, procedures and training for staff
  • Ensure compliance with University policies and procedures and applicable legal rules and regulations Basic Qualifications
    • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience required
    • Minimum of 8 years' relevant work experience
    • Supervisory experience Additional Qualifications and Skills Advanced degree, 5 years of experience as a college-level teacher or administrator and 3 years of direct advising experience at an academically demanding college preferred. PhD preferred. Strong communication skills in both speaking and writing, and strong interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to work well with students, faculty, and administrators; sensitivity to, and experience with, the needs of students from a broad range of backgrounds. Ability to handle multiple conflicting priorities and work on a variety of programs simultaneously. Additional Information The APO offers resources and programming designed to ensure robust training and informed alignment of College advisers with College policy and mission, acting as a hub among all College advisers. It serves as the critical interface between advisers and the College, working to align educational policies and procedures with the needs of each undergraduate class year and communicating those policies and procedures to advisers. By offering training, hosting ongoing professional development opportunities, and sharing best practices in advising, the APO builds a culture of shared advising principles and a strong community of advisers, including peer leaders, residential staff, and academic advisers. The APO accomplishes this by: Recruiting, training, and overseeing the work of approximately 400 faculty and staff who serve on the Board of Freshman Advisers (BFA), including providing ongoing training opportunities and support throughout the year. Also, assessing performance of advisers and providing feedback.-- Recruiting, training, and overseeing approximately 200 Peer Advising Fellows (sophomores, juniors, and seniors who provide mentoring support for first-year students).-- Tracking rosters and training for House-based advisers (including Sophomore Advising Coordinators and Specialty Tutors for academic and co-curricular opportunities).-- Working across the Office of Undergraduate Education and with colleagues in the Dean of Students Office, including the First-Year Experience Office, to communicate academic information in an accurate and timely way to students and advisers.-- Creating resources in a variety of media for students and advisers.-- Executing academic programming for first-year Orientation.
