The Position The Senior Director Research &Development (R&D) Business Development (BD) will have responsibility for evaluating external growth opportunities and, where appropriate, executing transactions to access the assets of interest. The Senior Director R&D BD regularly interfaces with therapeutic area heads, search and evaluation, alliance management, and senior management. This position is at the epicenter of the evolving R&D landscape and is critical in helping identify, evaluate, and weigh-in on opportunities in the marketplace. Relationships The Senior Director will work with colleagues through a matrix organization. The Senior Director will report to the Corporate--Vice President (CVP), R&D Business Development. Key stakeholders include, employees located in Novo Nordisk A/S, members of executive management, members of management in Research and Development and Global Drug Discovery (GDD), as well as stakeholders located within Novo Nordisk US Research locations. The Senior Director will act as point person and lead negotiator on substantial external collaborations with academic, biotech and large pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical partners. The role could potentially manage a small number of direct reports in the future. Essential Functions

  • Lead negotiations in critical business transactions
  • Demonstrated ability with creating value beyond the BioWorld value of a deal
  • Experience collating all cross functional diligence materials and feedback from interested parties. Orchestrating presentation/storyline that ties deal to corporate strategy, addresses competitive landscape, presents diligence issues and mitigation strategies, financial terms, intellectual property positions
  • Partner with Search & Evaluation team and the therapeutic area heads to improve identification of deals of interest and drive diligence to quickly come to "go" or "no go" decisions
  • Lead cross-functional evaluations of all aspects of therapeutic drug programs from preclinical through clinical stages across the relevant assessment areas: proposed clinical benefit, mechanism, preclinical data, manufacturing, regulatory strategy, clinical development path, intellectual property and commercial potential
  • Work effectively with legal, finance, commercial, clinical and scientific teams and make business development proposals to senior management. In particular, build enduring and trusting relationships with Finance and New Product Planning groups
  • Consider broad corporate priorities and participate in strategy planning for financial investment trade-off decisions required Physical Requirements Qualifications
    • Minimum of a master's degree required
    • 10+ years of relevant experience in pharmaceutical or biotechnology organizations required
      • Demonstrated track record of leading negotiations for multiple licensing transactions
      • Demonstrated record of presenting to senior management of partnership opportunities
      • Demonstrated ability to build rapport with therapeutic and functional area leaders
      • Demonstrated ability to influence senior management, converting a "no" to a "yes"
      • Proven ability to lead all elements of due diligence and deal negotiation
      • Leadership or people management experience in industry, biotech or academic research setting preferred
      • Preferred experience with renegotiating one or more licenses
      • Growing competency in collaboration deals with joint committees and potentially co-promotion rights
      • Strong analytical skills required to provide sound inputs into financial evaluations
      • Ability to identify and prioritize risks across functional areas, weigh those appropriately with benefits of investment, and effectively frame business decisions for senior management
      • Ability to successfully navigate internal dynamics, experience working in a matrix organization preferred
      • Organizational leadership experience preferred; ability to motivate others to advance goals, and the ability to effectively manage multiple projects or roles in a rapidly evolving environment Novo Nordisk is an equal opportunity employer.
