The University has exceptional standards and high ambitions in its educational and research agendas, and a top performing IT organization is critical to their achievement.

Reporting to the Executive Vice President, and as a member of the university executive leadership team, the CIO is responsible for information technology strategy, policies, and services that support teaching, learning, and research across Harvard. The CIO is Harvard's information technology architect, its primary thought leader on all IT-related matters, and the leader of the organizational and financial elements of its academic, administrative, and infrastructure technology resources. The CIO also maintains strong connections to the University's academic mission through reporting relationships with the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the Provost. The CIO heads Harvard University Information Technology (HUIT), a $200 million central IT organization with a staff of 640. HUIT is directly responsible for operating and supporting university enterprise systems, Central Administration's IT needs, and IT for the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. The CIO works closely with and convenes the School CIOs by chairing the University's CIO Council, which comprises the IT leads of each school. In collaboration with Harvard's CIO Council, HUIT fosters innovation across the University, in partnership with many departments and groups throughout the institution.

This position requires a leader with broad technology knowledge. A service-oriented leader and listener, the CIO will have a record of building and leading high-performing teams, establishing and sustaining productive working relationships with a range of constituencies, and achieving results through collaboration and influence. The CIO serves as the leader of Harvard University Information Technology (HUIT), a department in the University's Central Administration. Established in 2011 with the consolidation of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the Central Administration IT units, HUIT was formed as a service delivery unit to support the unified technology systems, including the integration of data centers, networks, and operation tools. HUIT is responsible for the strategy, planning, and delivery of information technology across the University. It is a living organization and strives to function nimbly, growing and adapting to the needs of the University and the changing landscape of technology.
