DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS, School of Engineering (SOE), to spearhead the strategic direction, planning, and execution of the SOE's strategic communications program and effectively present the school in all forms of media as a world center of inspiration for engineering and technology in research and education. Will report to and act as the dean's principal advisor on all communications-related matters and serve as a key member of his senior leadership team; play a key role in informing and connecting the SoE community of faculty, students, alumni, and staff and those who would like to help MIT solve great problems, to the benefit of MIT and the world; and manage internal and external resources that raise the school's visibility locally, nationally, and internationally. Responsibilities include developing and overseeing the school's approach to internal/external communications, including media relations, marketing, web strategy, and social media. Job Requirements REQUIRED: bachelor's degree (MBA/master's preferred) in a related field; at least seven years' communications/public relations experience, preferably in a higher education setting; in-depth knowledge of news media and public relations; excellent writing, editing, and oral presentation skills; demonstrated competency using social media and speaking publicly under pressure and in front of cameras; experience managing and developing staff and complex operations and working with senior officers; experience in high-stakes crisis communications and issues management; ability to quickly identify, analyze, and synthesize critical issues and remain calm in challenging situations; demonstrated success developing and executing strategic communications plans for complex organizations and advising people in high-level positions; discretion and judgment with highly sensitive/confidential information; and ability to motivate and persuade diverse groups and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
