Job Summary

Position Summary
The Creative & Content fellow will plan, develop, and execute video content, pairing dynamic storytelling with graphics to be distributed across Harvard platforms. The fellow will collaborate as part of the multimedia team to produce original, engaging multimedia content from script to shoot, to edit and delivery, on a variety of assignments for social media, Harvard.edu campaigns, and the Harvard Gazette. Working independently and as a team member, the AFP will receive project requests from HPAC's Creative Director, Creative Manager, Content Strategy team, and Communication Officers, managing multiple assignments simultaneously, generating ideas, and uploading footage according to deadline. Additionally, the fellow will combine sound editorial principles with visual storytelling in a variety of formats - social-first, short-form, animated, and/or long-form documentary style videos to support University initiatives and community relations.

Department Overview
HPAC's multimedia team produces stories on university priorities, campus updates and innovations, and broader national and global news. The team uses multimedia to advance information and communications related to the University's mission of excellence in teaching, learning, and research. As visual storytellers, it is our goal to develop a narrative to illustrate current events, both at Harvard and at-large. We find the human elements, make them relatable and interesting to watch through film, motion graphics, and audio. Our goal is to produce authentic stories that are inspirational, creative, innovative, and informative.

Job-Specific Responsibilities

  • Oversee all aspects of video production, including shooting, editing, audio recording and lighting.
  • Generate new content ideas from animated shorts to long-form documentary ideas
    • Collaborate with Harvard Gazette writers and digital content editors to produce innovative multimedia that supports existing editorial plans
    • Keep up with trends and strive for continuous improvement that benefits Harvard's audiences
    • Provide polished, high-quality video consistent with the brand of the University
    • Work with staff video producers and graphic designers as needed
    • Assist on film set, including setting up lighting, running audio, and monitoring cameras
    • Shoot footage, audio recording, looping footage, and interactive social media content
    • Capture, source, and animate additional images, video, text, and assets as needed
    • Select appropriate music & sound effects and track music usage
    • Impactful, visual storytelling that translates to high performance indicators like watch time, retention, and views
    • Actively participate in creative briefings to conceptualize and assist in the development and execution of creative concepts (both independently and with the team)

      Basic Qualifications

      • Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, Communications/Design, or related field
      • 5+ years of a video production experience in an editorial, agency or higher ed environment
      • Advanced-level knowledge of and experience with Adobe Premiere and After Effects; typography, audio, digital formats, video codecs, web & social delivery standards, editing, graphics, and video content platforms

        Additional Qualifications and Skills

        • Experience with motion graphics, and an understanding of how it can drive a story
        • Experience storyboarding, shooting, editing, and participating in creative brainstorms as well as helping to improve workflow
        • Strong interpersonal skills and be comfortable working with students, staff, and professors.
        • Must be open to and enthusiastic about experimenting with new ideas
        • Proven experience in identifying visuals that drive effective storytelling
        • Ability to work independently as well as intersect with an existing team juggling multiple deadlines
        • Strong creative writing and editing skills for proposals/pitches, scripts, slates, and captions
        • Aware of best practices for video production, encoding and posting
        • Excellent copyediting and quality assurance skills; meticulous attention to detail
        • Enthusiastic, positive, team-oriented attitude
        • Experience with the organization and archiving of video files
        • Strong project and time management skills with the ability to focus on priorities, problem solve, multitask, and meet deadlines
        • Creative thinker, comfortable pitching ideas, and contributing to team brainstorms
        • Passion for the ever-evolving world of social media and video editing

          This position is one-year term appointment.

          Recruitment and Hiring During COVID-19:
          This position will be based on our campus in Cambridge, MA. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this role will begin remotely. The remote nature of this job is only temporary. Once the University and the supervisor determine that it is appropriate, we look forward to welcoming the new hire to campus. At that time, the employee will be required to move work location to the Cambridge campus as a condition of continued employment. Candidates will be provided a laptop and must have the capability to support telework, including internet connection and phone.
